The power of astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid made by algae to withstand harmful external influences, such as sunlight and pollution. Beauty Astaxanthin contains the patented AstaReal®. This astaxanthin  is obtained by cultivating the naturally occurring microalgae, haematococcus pluvialis. Astaxanthin helps hydrate the skin and reduces the visible signs of aging (fewer wrinkles). Astaxanthin provides a youthful glow. Addition of vitamin C and vitamin E helps protect cells against oxidative damage caused by UV radiation.

Topical applications like serums and creams are able to influence the surface of the skin – the epidermis – but they can’t get down into the deeper layers, which contribute to skin elasticity and nourishment. However, research shows that natural astaxanthin is able to act on all of these layers and promote healthy skin from the inside out.

Research & Key Findings
UV-induced free radical damage causes wrinkles by degrading collagen and hyaluronic acid. However, it is possible to slow these processes down by providing targeted nutritional supplements. A large body of research has shown that astaxanthin can enhance overall skin appearance by improving skin moisture, elasticity and reducing wrinkles.

A randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study by Tominaga et al. (2012) involving 36 healthy male subjects showed that crow´s feet wrinkles, elasticity
and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were improved after 6 weeks of daily supplementation with 6mg of AstaReal® natural astaxanthin. Moisture content and
sebum oil level on the cheek zone also showed strong tendencies for improvement.

These findings have led other research groups to look further into the benefits of astaxanthin for skin health. In another study by Tominaga et al., the effect
of astaxanthin on wrinkle reduction and skin elasticity was investigated. 28 female subjects (20-55 yrs) were given a dietary supplement and a topical product
containing astaxanthin for 8 weeks. The results indicated a significant reduction in the depth of the subject´s fine and line-like wrinkles.

In one trial, while wrinkles and dryness worsened in the control group, the astaxanthin group was more resilient and maintained their healthy skin throughout the seasons. This result suggests that long-term prophylactic astaxanthin supplementation may inhibit age-related skin deterioration, thanks to its antioxidant effects.

Clinical Benefits of Natural Astaxanthin

  • Revitalizes photoaged skin by quenching oxidative stress
  • Reduces the size of wrinkles and improves skin micro texture
  • Improves elasticity in the skin by strengthening the collagen layer

Combining nutrients

Sometimes, the best effects can be achieved by combining several nutrients. In a placebo-controlled study, researchers found that women taking an
astaxanthin-collagen combination had significantly improved skin elasticity and skin barrier integrity, resulting in reduced moisture loss and a lower expression of
collagen and elastin degrading enzymes.

Beauty Astaxanthin can be combined with NutraSkin Collagen Drink.
